Marat Sade Bohnice (2012).
Althea Thauberger is a Vancouver based artist. Her films, videos, photographs and performances often involve a long term process of site research and cooperation with the subjects represented. In the last five years, she has co-created works with professional performers as well as child artists occupying an abandoned factory in Rijeka, Croatia; an experimental theatre group in the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital, Prague; speakers of minority and endangered languages in Quebec and northern Italy; Canadian women in uniform deployed in at the Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan; and conscientious objectors in Berlin. The projects explore the possibilities and limitations of the individual and collective imagination in relation to social, cultural and political institutions. She has recently had solo exhibitions at the Power Plant, Toronto and the Audain Gallery, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver and the Djanogly Gallery, University of Nottingham, UK. Her recent group exhibitions and screenings include the 2014 Montreal Biennale; the 7th Liverpool Biennial; The Vancouver Art Gallery; the National Gallery of Canada; and the 17th Sydney Biennale.
Cornish College of the Arts and Henry Art Gallery partner to present INCITE•INSIGHT, a series of public lectures and performances that promote engagement with contemporary art practice. Invited artists, curators, and thinkers will visit Seattle for short residencies to interact with students through group conversation and studio visits. The series emphasizes and advances the long-standing commitment that Cornish and the Henry share in support of meaningful dialogues around the social and cultural impact of art and the ideas of our time.
INCITE• INSIGHT is made possible with the generous support from The Catherine Eaton Skinner & David Skinner Visiting Artist Fund, The Thelma Lehmann Endowed Fund, and Wah & May Lui.
